Vietnam

This was a trip from Hanoi to Saigon, passing through Hue, Danang, Hoi An and Nha Trang with two small (12 and 9 years) children. Most of the people of Vietnam welcomed us with open arms and made us feel welcome. Wherever we went, we found friendly people, good food and very comfortable accommodation. The only fly in the ointment were the management of Vietnam Airlines. We found the airline to be unhelpful and one that seemed happy to live up to its reputation as being both unreasonable and unreliable.

Our confirmed seats were cancelled on two out of three flights. As a result, we had to pay for stand-by seats for one flight as they only had spaces in business class. This meant paying for seats on a plane on which we had already bought seats. We have tried and failed to recover the cost of our cancelled flights. On the other flight, there were no stand-by seats so we had to travel overland instead – a ten hour train journey from Danang to Nha Trang.

Note: as of 2014, we still have had no replies to our emails/letters to the airline and had not received a penny by way of refunds (2014 update). I would imagine that there never will be a refund now.
