Our places

This map marks the route of a journey that I took in 1987, starting in Athens and ending in the mountain town of Nagarkot. Many of the places visited are shown in photographs on this site. I then travelled to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore for a holiday to recover from nearly 12 months of hard travelling. On the way home, I visited Hong Kong and Southern California friends. When an old rugby teammate turned up, we went on a driving trip that took us from the Grand Canyon to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Sadly, the planned trip to Madison […]

Som Tam

This Som tam recipe is the Thai version of the Laotian dish tam mak hoong and is similar to the Cambodian dish bok l’hong. Pronounced [sôm tam]) and also known as tam mak hoong (Isan: ตำบักหุ่ง, pronounced [tam bàk hùŋ]) is a spicy salad of Lao origin, the standard form of which is made from shredded unripened papaya. It is also known as green papaya salad and is made from shredded unripe papaya. Kimchi

Kimchi, also spelled gimchi, kimchee, or kim chee, is a traditional fermented Korean dish made of vegetables with a variety of seasonings. This is Korea’s national dish, and there are hundreds of varieties made with a main vegetable ingredient such as napa cabbage, radish, scallion, or cucumber. Kimchi is also a main ingredient for many Korean dishes such as kimchi stew (김치찌개; kimchi jjigae), kimchi soup (김칫국; kimchiguk), and kimchi fried rice (김치볶음밥; kimchi bokkeumbap). I first ate kimchi in New Malden, where there are many Korean restaurants. Kimchi is so addictive that I had to have some at home. […]

West London slow roast beef

Rare roast beef is hard to cook using traditional roasting methods. When I cooked beef at a high temperature (160°C-180°C), in the past, it cooked quickly. However, if I monitored the core temperature and stopped cooking when it reached 60°C, only the inner core was rare, the outer third of the joint was well done, and it was medium rare in between. One day, I went to a major hotel for Sunday lunch and saw a big joint of roast beef that was all rare apart from a thin, well-done crust. I tracked down one of the chefs and asked […]

Our places

This ‘Our Places’ map shows each of the geolocations tagged on the pages on this website: I used ChatGBT to write the code that produces this map. I only needed to help it with debugging. ChatGBT generates PHP code by providing code examples, explaining concepts, answering questions, and assisting with problem-solving related to PHP programming. Between us, we ended up with PHP code that create a marker on a world map showing the coordinates embedded on each page of this site that you can ‘click’ to take you to that page. 1 likes
