Rumaila - burning off the gas
On tthe Rumaila field, oil comes out the ground as an oil/gas mixture. The gas is separated from the oil and burned off. This is one of many burning gas flares in the Rumaila field.
The energy is wasted, in a country where there is a lack of gas for cooking and a lack of electrify that could be generated using a gas fired generator.
As much as 1 billion cubic feet of gas is burned off every day.
