On 3 April, Captain Frost relinquished command of 604 FSS and proceeded to the UK on release. He flew to Gwalior and caught a train to Karachi.
He found a seat on a plane that was leaving India in two days. As he waited, he passed his time playing squash and horse riding. He left on 7 April on a converted Lancaster bomber and arrived in Haifa after a four-day flight.
He slept for most of the journey on a mat over the escape hatch. They stopped off at Haifa in Palestine to begin a period of acclimatisation.
The atmosphere in Palestine was very tense, as a huge explosion ordered by Menachim Begin had torn open the King David Hotel in which British officers were billeted, just a week before he arrived.
