Beirut 2011

The driver of the Bentley that came to pick me up from the airport was charming and gave me a guided tour of those parts of Beirut that he had to divert through because of the demonstrations elsewhere in the city.

Beirut is modern and clean, with only a few signs left of the fighting here in the past - pocked marked buildings,  scarred by the acne of war.

After Baghdad, the Beirut experience was great - hard to believe that Beirut was the focus of so much fighting just a few years ago. I eventually discovered that the Bentley had been sent for me because it had been bullet proofed...
