Introduction

The theme of this site is travel - on land, at sea and in the air. The site offers a collection of images taken by three generations of photographers, starting with pictures taken by Austin Frost at the turn of the century in the Far East. His photographs were taken on his travels in China, Japan, India, Iran and Egypt between 1906 and the mid 1920s.

The pictures taken by Tom Frost during WWII capture scenes in India, Saigon and the Dutch Celebes just before, and just after, the end of the war.

Recent pictures taken by Chris Frost span journeys across Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and the Americas over the past thirty years.

Chris has also taken his cameras underwater and into the skies. The pictures of SS Thistlegorm, a famous Red Sea wreck bring both flying and diving interests together and revealed more of the secrets of the sunken cargo.

Three months in Japan in 1907 - a personal journal

In 1907, my grandfather, then a doctor in the British Army,  visited Japan, traveling by steamer from Hong Kong to Kobe.

He traveled around the country for three months traveling variously on trains, electric trams, Jinsha railways, on foot,  and on horseback.

He made friends with his Japanese hosts, ate their food and learned their language - not knowing that his sons would end up fighting against the Japanese during WWII - and that one would not survive the war. and he kept al journal of his journey around Japan - which is now available to read on this site..

He also took a camera and some of the his photographs have been uploaded on to this site.

His account paints a unique picture of the tourist industry that was already well established in Japan at the beginning of the twentieth century.
